The new cloud technology at the service of agriculture

Innovation is not always synonymous with environmental benefits. Just think of the creation of the automobile and the decidedly negative impact that it, along with other inventions, has had on the environment and on man.

In recent years, however, we are witnessing a reversal of course. Probably to remedy the wrong choices of the past, in recent years technological innovation has been put at the service of environmental sustainability. In the IT world, a clear example of this is the cloud.

Amazon Web Service puts the cloud at the service of agriculture by supporting various realities created to optimize agricultural work through the collection and analysis of big data.

An example of realities created for the protection of the planet and based on AWS are:

SERVIR
which, alongside developing countries, uses information from satellites to optimize decisions on environmental prevention, agriculture, water, ecosystem and land use.

The International Rice Research Institute
, which has an important goal of reducing hunger and malnutrition by developing rice varieties capable of surviving droughts, floods, diseases and other potentially destructive events.

NEXRAD,

which is engaged in weather monitoring, predicts large disturbances and is used by researchers and large companies to mitigate the influence of weather on the activities of many sectors, first and foremost agriculture.

MOGREPS
, on the other hand, offers forecasts on the development of storms, winds, rain, snow, and fog that allow farmers to carefully plan the best time for planting.

With the use of the cloud , decisions are therefore made not on the basis of mere intuitions but on empirical data, quickly and in a timely manner. It is possible to predict favorable and unfavorable weather phenomena, monitor, even remotely, the state of the plots, prevent climatic disasters, improve crops, preserve and make the best use of water resources.
